The garage. The garden. The wardrobe. So why not your finances?
With the end of the year getting closer, spring is a great opportunity to step back and ask whether your current finance still makes sense for where you are today and where you want to be next.
Your circumstances may have changed. Your income may have changed. Your property may be worth more. Your business may have grown. You might be thinking about buying, renovating, investing, upgrading a vehicle or purchasing new equipment.
And your finance should keep up.
Here are 7 things worth putting on your financial spring-cleaning list.
1. When was the last time you reviewed your home loan?
Your mortgage probably isn’t something you think about every day.
But it can be one of the biggest expenses in your household.
A home loan review can look at your current interest rate, loan structure, repayments, available equity and whether your existing lender is still competitive for your circumstances.
And you don’t necessarily need to be looking to refinance to make a review worthwhile.
Sometimes the best financial decision is simply knowing where you stand.

2. Has your borrowing power changed?
This is a big one.
If you’ve had a pay rise, changed jobs, paid down debt, added a second income or changed your family circumstances, your borrowing position may look different from the last time you checked.
On the flip side, changes to expenses, existing commitments or lending policies can affect how much you may be able to borrow.
If you’re thinking about buying or investing in the next 6–12 months, knowing your numbers before you start looking can save a lot of time and disappointment.
3. Could your property be doing more for you?
If you’ve owned your property for a while, you may have built up equity.
That doesn’t mean you should automatically access it.
But it can be worth understanding what equity you have available and how it could potentially be used — whether that’s for renovations, another property, debt consolidation or another investment strategy.
The important part is understanding the cost, structure and long-term impact before making a decision.
4. Is your business ready for its next stage?
This is where we often see the conversation move beyond the traditional home loan.
Maybe your business has grown and you need new equipment.
Maybe you’re looking at a new vehicle, machinery or technology.
Maybe you’re considering purchasing commercial premises.
Or perhaps you simply need more working capital to give the business some breathing room.
There are different forms of business and commercial finance available, including business loans, lines of credit, equipment finance, asset finance and commercial property lending.
And importantly, the right finance isn’t always the biggest loan you can get.
It’s about understanding what the business actually needs and structuring the finance accordingly.
5. Are you carrying debt that no longer makes sense?
Credit cards, personal loans, car finance and other debts can accumulate over time.
A financial review can help you understand what you’re paying, how your debts are structured and whether there are opportunities to simplify things.
Debt consolidation can sometimes be useful, but it isn’t automatically the right solution. The interest rate, fees, loan term and overall cost all need to be considered.
The goal isn’t just to make the monthly number look smaller it’s to understand the bigger picture.
6. Are you planning a big purchase in the next 12 months?
- New car?
- Renovation?
- Investment property?
- Commercial premises?
- New machinery?
- Construction project?
Whatever it is, don’t wait until you need the finance to start thinking about it.
Getting an understanding of your borrowing position and potential finance options early can give you much more flexibility when the opportunity actually arrives.
7. Ask yourself one simple question: “Does my finance still fit my life?”
This is probably the most important question of all.
Your mortgage was structured based on your circumstances at a particular point in time.
But life doesn’t stay still.
You might have gone from renting to owning.
From one income to two.
From employee to business owner.
From first home to investor.
From small business to growing business.
Or you might simply be in a completely different financial position than you were a few years ago.
Your finance should evolve with you.
Your spring financial checklist
Before the year gets away from you, ask yourself:
- When did I last review my home loan?
- Is my current rate and loan structure still competitive?
- Has my borrowing capacity changed?
- Do I have usable equity?
- Am I carrying multiple debts that could be reviewed?
- Am I planning a property purchase or renovation?
- Does my business need funding for vehicles, equipment or growth?
- Could commercial property be part of my next move?
- What do I want my finances to look like 12 months from now?
You don’t need to have all the answers. That’s what the conversation is for.
